my husband

Sometimes when I’m scouting locations for Vancouver weddings or portrait sessions, I bring my husband along with me. He’s pretty cute.

He wants me to tell you that he wasn’t even posing.

Well, he might have been posing in the last image :)

In other exciting news, I re-did my “About” page today! Check it out!

What I’ve been working on over the winter

Hey everyone! It’s been a little quiet around these parts for the last little while :) Winter’s usually the “slow season” for wedding photographers, and this year I took that time to build and launch SimpleTax. If you’ve been around for awhile, you know that I used to be a tax lawyer and part time photographer. Then, for about four months I was a full-time photographer. And then I felt all “out-of-whack”. I actually find my photography is better when I balance it with something left-brained. So, I started building SimpleTax last May and it is such a great fit! I’m still my own boss, and I’m able to manage my time. And as tax season starts to wind-down, wedding season starts to wind up.

Most of this past winter was spent holed up building sexy Canadian tax software with these guys (the guy in the middle is my hubby, if you haven’t had the chance to meet him yet).

We’re incredibly excited to have built something awesome. Something that people are loving. Imagine that! People loving their tax software!

But, that doesn’t mean I stopped shooting. I’ve got an incredible summer full of weddings lined up this year, starting on May 4th—a whopping 4 days after tax season is done! Throughout April I’ll be updating the blog with some fantastic sessions I photographed over the winter. Get ready for babies and couples and lots of awesomeness.

And, of course, thanks for sticking around! It’s nice to see you again! I’ve missed you!

fershop :: what i learned

don’t be afraid to underexpose
look for inspiration everywhere, especially outside of wedding photography
capture how i see the world
show love in less obvious ways aka. “love is more than a f***ing kiss”
“it’s not what you see… it’s what you make everyone else feel” -degas
cull more
surround yourself with people you admire
trust + experiment
keep your camera to your eye
remember the in-between
every single wedding is unique
every single wedding is a story
look for context
detail shots are simply part of a human story
symmetry is key, be patient, work slowly
confront your fears
you are defined by your weakest image

Thank you Fer for such an amazing day, full of so much inspiration, hilarity, and sharing.

Get nice and close.

Be hilarious.

Find reflections everywhere.

Get low.

Shoot through things.

Entertain the neighbours.

Symmetry.

Underexpose.

Get low (take 2).

fershop :: workshop in san francisco

When I noticed that Fer Juaristi was doing a workshop in San Francisco, I jumped at the opportunity. So much learning. So much inspiration. Exactly what I had hoped for.

Later this week I’ll share a bit more of the behind the scenes and a share a bit about what I learned and how I was inspired. But for now, some frames of the insanely hot Shanni and Blaine.
